McCaig's Tower was built between 1897 and 1902 by John Stuart McCaig, a local banker and philanthropist. Modeled after the Colosseum in Rome, the tower was intended to provide work for local stonemasons and to honor the McCaig family. Although McCaig died in 1902 before the structure was completed, his vision lives on as one of Oban's most iconic landmarks. The tower was originally planned to have a museum and art gallery in the central area, but these plans were never realized.
